lyrics

River Mae

It was down in the tavern young sage River Mae
First laid swollen green eyes ‘pon the cowboys display
‘neath a worn withered hat he played cards like a cheat
Drank liquor like water and hustled the creeps
It wasn’t the prowess that stole river’s heart
But his candor and calluses sung from his heart
As he dived for his pistol and shot up the bar
He sang melodies born of the sun moon and stars
He sang river

He locked on her eyes as he strode from the bar
She followed on horse back and watched from afar
He turned and he faced her and watched how she moved
It was then he decided he’d nothing too loose
He touched her red check told her not to speak
Their bodies would teach them what being close means
Though she longed for him she nare felt a thing
Less he’d open his soul and he’d let the sound sing
He’d say river

Though it caused her misfortune river waited in vain
For the cowboy to offer his sound to poor Mae
Though he ebbed and he flowed he would share just a sip
Just enough for to taste all she wanted to give
The cowboy weren’t mean his heart was just broke
And he thought he could mend it by blocking his throat
But voices are voices whether heard they’re the same
You keep singing the same song lest you give it away
It goes river

River Mae stood by the edge of the lake
Her hands ‘neath the water ripples moved in her lake
She opened her mouth barely knew how to speak
As the tears trickled down melting into the deep
From a distance the cowboy heard the sound of his muse
As she opened her heart to the beckoning blues
She sang as she waded beyond her loves reach
As he ran to the music he knew he could speak
She sang river

The cowboy he stood by the edge of the water
Her music was still in his soul ever after
River Mae floated her body caressed
By the love of the water the sound of his breath
As he pulled River Mae from the hold of her grave
He knew nothing was worth all the silence he’d made
And he swore at that moment he’d sing from his soul
The sound of his river may god bless her soul

He sang River Mae
River stay
River flow
